Door Handle Replacement

It's worth it to replace door handles if you aren't happy with the way they look, or if they're difficult to use. Installing the new handle on your door is easy if you have patience.

Modern door handles are often equipped with cover plates which hide the screws for a more attractive appearance. If your new handle does not have screws already attached, you will have to attach them separately.

Remove the Old Handle

The door handle is not only a decorative addition to your home, but it's also an important safety feature that lets you to lock and unlock the door. However, as time passes your door handle can lose its grip, become loose, or look old and worn out. This is a sign that it's probably the time to replace your door handle.

If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it might be time to replace it. This is a problem since it means you can no longer lock or unlock your door which could be the risk of security for you and your family.

The first step is to take off the screw holding the old latch plate. These screws are often tight, and may require some force to loosen. If you are able, it could be beneficial to have a second person help with this process.

After the screws have been removed, the latch plate should pull out of the double glazed door handle repair with ease. If it's stuck or won't move then use a small nail file to scrape around the edges of the latch plate. This can sometimes free up the plate.

Now you can prepare the new strike plate to be installed. Install the latch plate in the door jamb using the screws that came with the new handles. Be careful not to over-tighten the screws, as this may cause damage to the strike plate.

If you're unsure if the latch plate is in the correct position You can try closing and then opening the door lock handle repair to determine if it closes and latches correctly. If it does not you'll have to adjust the strikeplate upwards or down, or forward or back until the door locks properly.

If the door continues to move or jiggles, you might have to expand your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more common on older doors. If this is the case, follow the same procedure to adjust the strike plate, but using an iron file instead of the hammer and chisel.

Eliminating the Latch

The latch is an angled metal piece which slides in and out of a hole in the inside of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes this latch forward which allows you to open the door. It also hooks into a hole in the frame of the door to keep the door closed. If your door wobbles when you close it, replacing the latch could be all that is needed to fix the issue.

The screws that secure the door latch are hard to spot however, you can insert a screwdriver into a small hole on the trim plate and then pry the latch off. After you've removed the trim plate, it'll be easy to remove the latch as well as the remaining bolts that hold the spindle and latch in the position.

If the latch cannot be easily removed using a paperclip or tool to remove it from the handle mechanism. Place the item in the recessed latch slot and gently twist or jiggle it until you feel the latch and handle start to split. It is possible to repeat this process several times before you are able to pull the latch out.

You should be able slide the new latch into its slot without any problems after you have removed the old one. Make sure that the latch is properly positioned in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers and then use your new screws to secure it to the strike plate and door frame.

Measure the existing backset (the distance between the center of the large hole in the door's front and the edge) before installing the new handle. You should also check whether the size of the latch on the new handle is in line with this measurement.

You'll require a new lock cylinder if you're replacing the latch and handle, or your old one is damaged. If you're not changing the locks the new latch will fit in your existing recess and will be compatible with your current keys. Make sure you select an entry point with a rectangular cover plate that match your old handles.

Removal of the Cover Plate
