However, they do have several flaws that prevent them from being our top pick. One of them is that the Q5's navigation system does not feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology which means it's susceptible to getting hung up on socks and shoes and couldn't navigate rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. Also, it doesn't have an image sensor that lets it see the corners of a room.

It's still a good value for those whose home or office has a lot of bare floors and you're looking to save money. It's also very quiet and can be used when you're at work or going to school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming feature that's offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes that don't stick well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle, however. It also supports voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It even cleans the floor after it vacuums, a feature that we've not seen on other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

This robot vacuum and mop combination features a sleek, circular design that looks more like a regular Roomba unit than the boxy models from the rivals. It's one of our most appealing looking robot vacuums. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also its smartest. It features advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads autonomously).

It's also the only robotic vacuum/mop to score the perfect 10/10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is thanks to a combination modern sensors, including a restructured light system, camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation on its own. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mops.

As with other iRobot models as well, the X40 is easy to use, offering an intuitive mobile app interface, and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. The only downside is that the X40 is still a noisy unit. This can be a concern in the mornings before work, or during the night when you're trying to fall asleep.

If you own a larger home, you should consider selecting a robot that comes with the option of cleaning zones or spots. This lets you tell the robot which area of your house needs to be cleaned using the app or voice control. A stairway mode is useful if you own a number of furniture. Additionally a recharge and resume function that lets your robot vacuum take over exactly where it left off is ideal for busy families.
