Diablo 4 Item Upgrades

Item upgrades allow players to increase the level of equippable items such as weapons, armor, and trinkets above a certain threshold. They can be purchased at any upgrader NPC using the appropriate currency.

Slots are used to add upgrades to equipment to gain attributes and bonuses, as well as other effects. These are mostly slot-restricted, but there are some universal upgrades.

Rerolling

In Diablo 4, a player can roll a new upgrade to an item. This is accomplished through the Level Up mechanic, which pauses the game and displays the four randomly selected upgrades. Certain sets come with set bonuses that give additional effects if Link wears the whole set. These bonuses are beneficial in certain situations, such as when exploring the Gerudo Desert and in dungeons. The Desert Voe set, for example, provides an Stealth Up effect that makes it easier to get past enemies.

Universal upgrades can be used on any type of equipment. These upgrades have lower rewards than the ones that are restricted to certain types however they are much easier to acquire. Some of these upgrades are gems, that can be made by a jeweler and can be used in any trinket slot. Other upgrade components can only be used in weapon accessories, and offer a small amount of bonus without increasing damage.

Requirements

There is simply not enough space to implement it in a proper manner within the UI.

A script that examines the requirements of an item's upgrade before allowing the item to be upgraded is a different solution. This approach is ideal for systems that have a limited number of upgradeable items and a simple upgrade dependence. An example is a sword that can be upgraded from Sword +2 to Sword +2. A script could look for the Item Definition attribute for each upgrade, and then set the Item Status to "upgraded" to indicate that the upgrade was valid.

You can either craft upgrade components or purchase them from vendors. You can also collect or drop them from other players or get them as rewards. Upgrade components can be put into weapons, armor, and trinkets. They can also be mounted to gathering tools. However, most upgrade components cannot be repaired or reused, except by using an Upgrade Extractor. The only exception is glyphs. These can be salvaged by using the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or the Ascended Salvage tool.

Based on the type of item, upgrading an item upgrader mod can cost Dilithium or gold. Many upgrades also require Flightstones or crests. The amount of Flightstones and Crests required to upgrade an item is determined by the level of the item. Blizzard also sets a maximum upgrade level. Upgrades to the highest level are expensive, especially when upgrading PvE equipment.

Upgrades can also alter the weapon's ammunition or damage die size. They also can alter the special characteristics of a weapon like its heavy or operative property, or its hand requirement. Certain upgrades can alter the appearance of a weapon.

While boosting stats is the main goal of upgrades to items, you should consider the cost of upgrading an item before making a decision. Spend your gold on rare items, and not on items of the common or magic tier. The upgrading of these items wastes valuable resources, and you'll quickly find that rare gear outclasses them.

Ask your guild members for their opinions if you are unsure whether upgrading is worth the cost. You may be able find more efficient upgrades for less. It's best to upgrade your gear as quickly as you can, as the upgrades will cost more over time. If you cannot afford the upgrade costs it may be best to hold off. This will allow you to maximize your potential.
