Door Handle Replacement

Door handles may seem like something minor but if you aren't happy with the way they look or are unable to use them, it's worth replacing them. With a bit of patience, you can install an entirely new handle in a short time.

Modern door handles are equipped with cover plates that conceal the screws to give them a beautiful appearance. If your new handle doesn't have screws already connected, you'll have to attach them separately.

Removal of the old Upvc door handles Handle

Door handles are not only essential for aesthetics of your home, but they're vital for safety since they let you lock and unlock your door. However, as time passes the door handle could lose its grip, become loose, or appear old and worn. This is a good indication that it's time to replace the door handle.

If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it could be time to replace it. This is a serious problem as you will no longer be able to lock or unlock the door, which could put your family and yourself at risk.

It is also recommended to replace your door handle if it is damaged or broken. A damaged or broken external door handles handle can be risky, particularly for children and elderly family members who may struggle to open it. They could be trapped. Luckily, it's quite simple to fix a damaged door handle by simply replacing the handle that was broken.

Modern door handles are generally standard sizes and will fit any door. If you're not sure if the new door handle you're buying will fit, try removing the old one and measuring the holes in its housing. This will allow you to buy the correct sized door handle.

The easiest way to take off your old door handle is to take it off of the upvc door handles replacement itself. Usually, a screwdriver is used. Some door handles have an enclosure plate that hides the mounting screws. You will need to remove it to get to the screws. Once you've removed your old handle, make an outline of how the spindle is attached to ensure you are able to make sure it is aligned when you put in the new one.

You can also remove the door handle by unscrewing the latch mechanism. You can use a screwdriver for removing the door handle. But, you'll have to locate the small latch that is located on the edge cut piece. After you have removed the latch, remove the handle from the strike plate, and then remove the latch off the door's edge.

Removal of the Strike Plate

If you are replacing the handle, you'll want to replace the latch plate, which is the hole which the door's latch hooks into when it closes. The packaging that the new upvc windows handles arrive with will offer two latch plates - one that is rectangular and the other a circular one (see the diagram above for door handle parts). If you have a rectangular latch plate, replace it with an oval one. This will allow the latch to hook into the strike plate, making the handle easier.

The first step is to take off the screw holding the latch plate. The screws are usually quite tight and require a fair amount of force to loosen them. It may be helpful to get a second person to assist in this area if it is possible.

The latch plate should easily come out of the door once the screws have been removed. If it is stuck or doesn't move then use a small nail file to scrape around the edges of the latch plate. This can sometimes free up the plate.

Now you can prepare the new strike plate for installation. Using the wood screws that were included with your new handles, screw the latch plate onto the inside of the doorjamb. Do not overtighten your screws as this could cause damage to the strike plate.

If you're unsure if the latch plate is in the right position Try closing and opening the door to determine whether it locks and closes correctly. If it does not then you'll need to adjust the strikeplate up or down, forward or back until the door locks properly.

If the door is moving or jiggling, then you may need to increase the size of the hole for the latch in the strike plate. This is more prevalent in older doors, however it can happen due to wear and tear, hinge mortises that are not deep enough or the wrong size for the latch, or due to a broken or damaged strike plate that is damaged or broken. If this is the situation, follow the same procedure to adjust the strike plate, using a metal file instead of the hammer and chisel.

Removal of the Latch

The latch is a bent metal piece which slides in and out of a hole in the inside of your door. The latch moves forward when you turn the handle. It also catches a hole on the door's frame so that the door stays closed. If your door shakes when you close it, replacing the latch might be all you need to fix it.

The screws that hold the door latch are difficult to see however, you can use a screwdriver to make an insignificant hole on the trim plate and pry the latch off. After removal of the trim plate you should be able to remove the latch, as well as the bolts that hold it in place and the spindle in position.

If the latch won't release, try using an old-fashioned paper clip or tool to spring it loose from the handle mechanism. Place the item into the recessed latch slot and then gently twist or jiggle until you feel the handle and latch begin to separate. It may take this several times before the latch becomes loose enough to allow it to be pulled out.

You should be able slide the new latch into its slot without issues once you have removed the old one. Use your new screws to secure the latch to the strike plate or patio door handle frame. Make sure that it is properly positioned in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers.

Take note of the backset (the distance between the center of the large hole on the door's front and the edge) before installing the new handle. Also, make sure whether the size of the latch on the new brompton carry handle is a good match to this measurement.

You'll require a new lock cylinder if you're replacing the latch and handle or your existing one is damaged. If you're not changing locks the new lock should fit into your existing recess and also work with your current keys. Make sure you select the latch with a rectangular cover plate that match the handles you have.

Then remove the Cover Plate

You can replace your old door handles with a new lever and rose design to make a difference in the appearance of your house. You can purchase complete sets that come with the appropriate escutcheons and privacy adjustor kits.

The first step in replacing an internal door handle is to remove the cover plate or rose, which covers the screws and mechanism inside. Use a flathead to remove the cover plate. It could have an opening along one side or be held in place by a pin.

Remove the screw that is holding the handle inside and place it aside when the cover plate is removed. You'll also need to remove the screws that are holding the latch and plates to the door, which you can accomplish by loosening them using the help of a Philips screwdriver. Then, remove the inner plates and latch plate from the door and put them aside.

Most doors have an opening between the jamb of the door and the inside edge of the frame that makes room for a handle, however not all do. If yours doesn't, you'll need to drill a hole into the door to install the new handle. The process for doing this is the same as opening a door using the lock, however you'll have to be extra careful to avoid damaging the frame or door.

After drilling the holes then you'll need to install new screws for the door knob. Choose the same size as your old screws to avoid getting a handle that is too loose or tight. You'll also have to install the new strike rod and latch plate, which aren't included with most door handle sets.
