If you want to keep your baby as close as possible to him at night, without having to get out of bed, a bedside crib is the
best bedside cot option. The fabric is breathable and allows you to easily see your baby and they are simple to lower when you require a 3am feed.
Some also double up as a moses basket, too.
What is a bedside crib?
A bedside crib (also known as a co-sleeper or bassinet) is a small baby crib that is attached to your adult bed, allowing your newborn to sleep in a safe environment with you. This is a secure form of co-sleeping and doesn't increase your risk of SIDS like bedsharing. It also helps you bond with your newborn baby.
They usually have a side that is able to be lowered, so you can easily reach your baby throughout the night for feeding and comforting. This is particularly helpful for mothers recovering from a csection. Many of them are foldable or portable so you can use them to travel or as a temporary solution for newborns who aren't quite ready to transition to a larger crib.
Look for a crib with an air-conditioned mattress, as well as a protective cover that will shield your baby from stains. You'll also want to buy baby-safe items such as a blanket, a teether and cuddly toy.
If you're looking for a long-term option, some cribs come with conversion kits that let you turn them into a cot or toddler bed at the time of need. This is a great way to extend their life and making the transition easier. Some come with a removable section at the top that can be turned into a bassinet. Other models can be used with either a standard adult bed or a high-rise bed. This is a great option for families that plan to travel frequently or switch between bedrooms at night. Be aware of the dimensions of your room to ensure that you fit in the crib comfortably. Many cribs come with an riser that can be used to create an inclined position for infants who suffer from reflux.
The Joie Roomie Glide
Famous for their high-end baby products for babies, the English brand Joie has stepped into the world of cribs that are
bedside crib and travel cot with the Roomie Glide. This co-sleeper was designed to help parents bond and sleep side-by-side with their babies, without sharing a single bed. It is full of features that make bonding between parents and
baby bedside cot secure, easy, and fun.
One of the main features is a smooth rocking motion that can be activated with the touch of a button. This can soothe baby into sleep by a gentle rhythm that doesn't disrupt their normal sleep pattern. This is great for toddlers and older babies who are struggling to settle. It can help with digestion problems such as colic and reflux.
The crib can also be affixed to the side of the bed by clips and straps. This makes the crib solid and secure and allows you to sleep soundly without worrying that your baby might roll off into the middle. The rounded shape of the cocoon features soft padding on the sides as well as double mesh windows at both ends. This allows for airflow while keeping your baby safe.
The included mattress is comfortable and firm. It also comes with a washable cover. The aluminum frame is lightweight, making the crib extremely lightweight and easy to set up. The four lockable wheels are rubber-covered to ensure that the crib doesn't leave marks on your floor and are easy to move around. The crib is easy to clean with the fabric that is washable and can be easily packed in bags for overnight stays.
The TuttiBambini Air
Designed to be a safe next-to-me crib from birth to six months old, this premium model has rocking bars and castors to allow for easy mobility. The airflow mattress is a premium model that provides an incredibly comfortable sleeping surface, while the ventilation panels ensure your baby is kept cool. There are 6 different height settings as well as an incline option that could help with congestion and reflux.
The Tutti Bambini COZee Air crib has a removable fabric and a wipe-clean lining. This makes it easier to clean than bedside cribs that can be messy to clean. It also comes with a top bar which can be easily lowered to accommodate feedings at night without having to fiddle with zips.
Anna found that the CoZee was a comfortable and safe place to sleep for her baby. She was pleased the fact that it didn't roll like other models, which meant it didn't wake her up at night while she was trying to soothe her baby for feedings. She also appreciated that the sides of the chair was lowered so she didn't need to reach over her partner to lift the child out to feed them at night.
The CoZee is available in charcoal or oak and is a chic addition to any bedroom. It's more an elegant piece of furniture than some of the other cribs that we've tested, and can appear rather utilitarian. It's also relatively lightweight at 11kg and comes with a carrying case which allows you to take it on vacation or when you move home. It's all you need to buy is an extra waterproof sheet and safety strap to sleep with your partner. The instructions and illustrations are easy to follow when you first open the box.
The Maxi-Cosi Lora
The Iora is a bassinet that can be placed at the bedside that allows parents to feel more connected to their infant while they sleep. It can be adjusted upwards and downwards, and moved through three different slide positions, to fit under the parent's bed or in the corner so that the baby is always at hand. The mesh siding allows air to flow through, and allows you to see your baby easily. And you can store extra pajamas and supplies in the large storage basket beneath.
The Iora is a smaller bedside cot that can fold flat. It also comes with a travel bag to allow it to be carried anywhere. Our mum testers were able to move it from room to room, and believed that it was a suitable size for a bedside cot, and not too big or small. The large storage basket is perfect for storing extra bedding or nappies.
This is a great choice for parents who want to co-sleep, but don't wish to share their bed. Or if one of the partners has mobility issues like arthritis or back pain. Our mom testers loved that they could easily access their child in the Iora and that it had an adjustable reflux incline that helped alleviate gas.
Our mums are also thrilled that it complies with NICE guidelines, which are to place the infant in a crib or Moses basket on its own (with no blankets, toys, pillows, etc). The mattress is also a good firm and comfortable for babies and sheets are easily available. It isn't as light as other cribs that are smaller however and if you're looking for something lighter and easier to move around with, consider one of the other options on our list.
