If you have lost your keys, go through the steps you took (including your pockets for your coat and trousers). You might be asked to show proof of ownership, for example your vehicle's title or registration.

Keyless Entry

Keyless entry lets you unlock your car and start it without having to insert your key into the lock. This system uses radio signals that are sent by the vehicle. Then, you have a key fob that searches for these signals. When the fob is in range of the signals, it transmits an encoded code that unlocks the doors and disarms the vehicle's immobiliser system located in the engine control unit (ECU).

Some systems include a remote-ignition feature that allows you to start your car by using the key fob, or a button on the dashboard. This feature is invaluable when you have to go out and get groceries or when keys are locked inside.

It's the most obvious benefit. You can enter your car without having to search for your keys in the dark, which can be difficult when you are carrying loads. This system can be used to open the trunk and hatch which is great for people who are carrying loads of stuff.

If your keyless entry or start does not work it could be due to the battery inside your key fob. If this is the problem, you can usually tell by looking for an icon on the back of the key fob that you can press. If this isn't working, you might need to take your car to an expert locksmith or dealer to get the key fob programmed.

Immobiliser

The Immobiliser (or Engine Immobiliser) is an built-in anti-theft device that stops your vehicle from starting if you don't have having a key. It works by comparing the digital code on the key fob or key with the unique code in the vehicle's ECU. When these codes are in sync, the ECU activates the ignition and fuel system. If the codes don't match then your car will not start when the fuel pump is not working or ignition is not working.

While the Immobiliser will stop thieves from hot-wiring your vehicle, it's not foolproof, and it can be defeated by determined criminals. It is crucial to take additional security measures such as keeping valuables safe and not leaving them inside the car while you're away.

Another method of security is to utilize a faraday pouch that will block the signal between the key fob and the car's electronic systems, and make it difficult for criminals to intercept and copy the signal. The most recent suzuki key fob models also feature another security measure that requires the key to be placed near the ignition when turning it on.

Despite these measures however, modern immobilisers remain susceptible to attacks by expert criminals. In one study the researcher Jaap Bokslag tried to steal three cars of a popular brand and crack the immobiliser within a matter of minutes by exploiting known weaknesses in the system.

Security System

Suzuki's are among the best-selling cars on Australian roads and they come with an inbuilt immobiliser system to avoid being hot wired. The key contains a tiny transponder chip roughly the size of one PS1 penny, that communicates an individual code to electronic control unit (ECU) of the vehicle. If the ECU is not receiving this code when you insert the ignition key into the barrel, your car will not start.

Up to 1996, suzuki alto key dealers used two different dealer-installed systems. The first was produced by Advance Security. The original keyfob had the Suzuki logo on the front and the FCC ID B23AT54 on the back. The original keyfob is no longer available, however Remotes Unlimited still has a 2-button Hellfire Remote (also manufactured by Advance Security).

After 2000 the new Suzukis are equipped with a factory-installed key lock system. The system comes with an immobiliser that is built into. The key comes with a tiny chip that acts as transponder. It is concealed under an aluminum cap. The chip is packed with a complicated code that the vehicle's ECU searches for when you turn the key in the ignition barrel. If the chip on the new key doesn't coincide with the one in your ECU and the car does not start, it will not start. The issue can be quite difficult to solve however our Auckland auto locksmiths know how to fix it swiftly and easily.

Keys

The majority of Suzukis come with keys that have an embedded microchip (transponder chip) which is less than a coin you carry in your pocket. When you insert your key into the barrel of your ignition the ECU in your vehicle reads the code from the chip. If it doesn't match it will not start. So, if you lose your only key and don't have a spare you'll need to locate an auto locksmith who is specialized and has the right equipment to replace it.

I program and supply two or three suzuki sx4 replacement key transponder keys and smart key fobs every week, they are quite easy to do. If you have lost your keys, you'll have to visit your locksmith or dealer who has decent diagnostic equipment to code your new replacement. Suzuki dealers can take up to one week to complete this procedure. Auto locksmiths can code keys faster and cheaper because they have the necessary equipment. This is not the case with non-transponder metal keys, which don't require code.
