Lolita’s Personality

Macaws are great companion birds. They are intelligent and affectionate. These birds do best with well-rounded families. They can be bored quickly and will discover ways to entertain themselves when their owners aren't engaged with them often enough. If not properly socialized macaws may become aggressive and may even bite. It is essential that boundaries are clearly defined to ensure that the Darling hahns macaw doesn't feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general, are active birds who are a joy to play with, interact with, and climb. They require at least 2 to 3 hours each day outside their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games, listening to music and learning new tricks. They also love going to the playgrounds and parks as well as hiking and going to local restaurants and bars. In addition to being a fun pet, they also make wonderful pets for children.

Despite their adoring appearance, these birds are very loud and can be a nuisance to those living near. They can emit ear-splitting screeches and loud calls, which can be annoying for those who live in condos or apartments.

This species is also monomorphic. Males and females are difficult to differentiate. This is why DNA testing is the only method of determining sex. Once the birds' sex is determined and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.

Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to learn commands and phrases. This is a long process, and the pet's owner has to be patient and realize that this is a difficult task. Positive reinforcement can to speed up the process and help correct any behavior issues.

Lolita's Care

For a long time activists have been lobbying for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, marine biologists believed that Lolita might have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get a chance to return to the ocean.

The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her in danger. They undermine her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her by putting her through head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. In addition, they keep her in a tiny tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as a relative and plan to eventually move her to open waters. The plan included a facility on the west coast of Washington where she could spend the rest of her days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami house and was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that bond with their family members until death. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for 40 years. The nation's most active activists including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her to retire from Seaquarium's stage, and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

As is the case with any animal species in captivity, a captive blue and gold macaw's health is dependent on a balanced diet. These beautiful birds require high-quality food and plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A macaw that is well-fed in captivity can live up to 60 years old. In addition, this majestic bird requires plenty of space to move around and exercise.

A macaw with gold and blue eyes can be a charming companion that is also quite smart. They are renowned for their ability to master new tricks and vocabulary quickly. This bird is a great option for those who are just beginning their journey to avian companionship.

Additionally to that, this bird requires lots of interaction and bonds with her human family members easily. Miami Seaquarium released a series updates on the status of Lolita's health however there are many questions. Akromas and others who have supervised or trained Lolita's health over time are concerned about her diet. According to the latest update on the Friends of Lolita site, she consumes 115 pounds salmon per day, as well as capelin, herring and squid.

Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita is being criticized over the quality of food that they provide to killer whales. The 57-year-old orca was removed from Puget Sound, Washington, in the year 1970. Although the species is threatened and is in a tank that some consider to be too small.

Lolita's Health

While her beauty is unquestionable Lolita's health continues deteriorate. Her health has been a cause of concern for animal welfare organizations who would like to see her released into the wild. Lolita blue & gold macaw is a resident at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970, has been a tourist attraction for a long time. She has battled chronic illnesses and a crippling infection that has left her in a vulnerable state.

The Miami Seaquarium, now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not provided information about Lolita's present condition. However, the non-profit organization Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These updates reveal that Toki is aging rapidly and that her health has declined.

Since her captor doesn't have to divulge this information, it is not clear what specific health issue the orca is suffering from. However, a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a common cause in the deaths of captive orcas.

Despite the ongoing health issues there is a lot of hope that Lolita could be closer to living in the wild than ever before. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to relocate the whale out of her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.

After years of public pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea where she can swim deep in the water, perhaps even being reunited with her mother orca. These plans came too late to save the whale, which passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney problem.
