Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality

They can be bored quickly and find ways to entertain themselves if their owners are not engaged with them often enough. Macaws that aren't socialized can become aggressive and can even bite. It is important to have clear boundaries set to ensure that the macaw does feel threatened.

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds who are fond of playing, climbing and play. They should spend at least 2 to 3 hours a day outdoors to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They enjoy playing games while listening to music, and learning tricks. They also enjoy playing in parks and playgrounds, hiking and visiting local bars and restaurants. They are not only a wonderful pet, but they are also a wonderful pet for children.

They can be extremely loud, despite their affection for them. They can also be a nuisance to those living nearby. They are capable of loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which can be disruptive in apartments and condos or near young children who may be frightened by their roar.

Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic meaning males and females are hard to tell apart. Because of this the only way to determine sex is via DNA testing. Once the sex of the birds is determined, breeding can begin.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases, and tricks. It is a lengthy process and the pet's owner must be patient and recognize that this is a difficult task. The use of positive reinforcement can help speed up the process and help to correct any behavioral issues.

Lolita's Care

Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to cease performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, marine biologists hoped that Lolita might suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to go back to sea.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, overexerting her by putting her through head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, making her lose weight and weakening her immune system. They also place her in a tank one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.

In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, pledged to work on plans with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her to open water eventually. The plan would have included a sanctuary on Washington's west coast where she could live for the duration of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean, not an empty concrete tank.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita who has been alone at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is being released into the wild. Many activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.

This module comes with a manual and an instructional DVD of Lolita teaching the system for personal practice.

Lolita's Diet

As with any animal species, a captive gold and blue macaw's health is contingent on a balanced diet. These beautiful birds require premium food and lots of fresh vegetables, fruits and whole grains. In captivity, a macaw well-fed is likely to live up to 60 years. Additionally, this magnificent bird requires plenty of space to move around and exercise.

A golden and blue macaw is a charming companion, but also clever. They are known to swiftly learn new terms and tricks, and they are extremely adaptable. This bird is ideal for those who are just beginning their journey into avian companionship.

This bird is also very social and easily bonds with her family members. Macaws with gold and blue eyes are known for their loud vocalizations including "flock call" as part of their natural behavior. They may also squabble or chew at times, particularly when they're angry or bored. This type of behavior is expected of prospective pet owners.

The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of updates on Lolita's health and condition but there are still questions. Certain experts, like Akromas who was a trainer or supervised the care of Lolita at some point, have expressed concerns about her diet. According to the latest update on the Friends of Lolita site, she consumes 115 pounds of salmon per day, along with herring, capelin and squid.

Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita, has been critiqued for the quality of the food they feed to their killer whales. The 57-year-old orca was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and even though the species is endangered in the wild, she is in an aquarium that many claim is too small for her.

The Miami Seaquarium is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not provided information about Lolita's present health. However, the non-profit organization Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. They show that she is aging quickly and that her health is deteriorating.

Since her captor doesn't have to divulge this information, it is not clear what specific health issue the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies collected from Sea World. This shows that kidney diseases often play a part in the deaths of orcas in captivity.

Despite the ongoing health concerns of Lolita many believe that she could be closer than ever to an unspoiled life. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to relocate the whale out of her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.

The move comes following years of public pressure as well as from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea in which she can swim in the ocean, and possibly even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. Sadly these plans came late for the beloved whale, who died on Friday from what was believed to be a kidney issue.
