Both the Q5 as well as the Q7 Max Series get very high scores on our tests on floors that are bare, and they're particularly adept in cleaning pet hair. However, they have several flaws that prevent them from being our top pick. One of them is that the Q5's navigation system does not have AI-powered obstacle avoidance, so it's prone to get caught up in shoes and socks and can't navigate tightly packed rooms very efficiently in our tests. 2. IRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming into a sleek, compact package. Its quick navigation and smart cleaning maps make it easy to clean and efficient at taking on larger particles, such as pet hair. It also features an impressive suction system and an automatic hoover bin for emptying. It's the most efficient robotic cleaner and mop hoover for carpets, but it isn't as effective as some of its competitors in terms of deep cleaning.

This high-performance vacuum and mop uses sensors that help it avoid obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the patterns of your home over time to provide cleaner and more efficient cleaning. You can change its cleaning schedule and customize zones with the well-designed app. It comes with a battery life that is comparable to other models.

It is possible to instruct the X30 Ultra to remove its mops and to extend them when in a room with carpet, which helps prevent cross-contamination. It's more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however, it comes with superior suction, a dustbin on board that automatically fills up its base, and supports voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can clean the floor even after it has vacuumed. This is a feature we haven't seen before on other robotic vacuum/mop combinations.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

The robot vacuum and mop combination features a sleek, circular design that appears more like a regular Roomba unit than the boxy models from the rivals. It is one of our most appealing looking robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is among the most intelligent and has advanced features like enhanced dirt detection technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can wash its own mop pads).

It's also the only robot vacuum/mop that scored an absolute 10 out of 10 in our testing. This is due to a combination modern sensors, including a restructured light system, camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and boasts an the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

As with other iRobot models as well, the X40 is user-friendly, offering an easy mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only drawback is that it's an eerily noisy device which could be an issue if you use it in the morning prior to work or at night as you attempt to sleep.

It's also quite expensive however, not as much as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are both equally impressive and attractive. If you're willing with a little more noise and a little more cost it's a powerful two-in-one that will please almost everyone.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the line robot mop and vacuum. It comes with a variety of features that are advanced and will help you forget your chores. Like Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that can take charge of both mopping and vacuuming, with a multifunction dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank and washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of LIDAR and structured lighting to create floor plans and detect obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its premium competitors. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards however this was not completely foolproof in our tests, and could be confused with power cords or obstructions.

Its vacuum has a suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to finish the job. It also features "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the amount of time the vacuum works and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house according to the amount of dirt they tend to be.

If you own a larger home, it is worth selecting a robot vacuum cleaners best that comes with spot or zone cleaning mode. This allows you to tell the best robot vacuum which area of your home needs to be cleaned using the app or voice control. A stairway mode is useful if you have a large furniture. For families with busy schedules, a recharge function and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to pick up where it left off can be extremely useful.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is a more efficient cleaner than you would expect from its price tag. It vacuums well and was able to remove 55% of debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using one pad that has an oscillating motion that is cleaner than the other mop cleaners for robots we've tested. It's self-sufficient too, with a fully-featured app as well as an auto-emptying washable base.

The iRobot application is designed to guide you through an exercise in mapping, which gathers information on your floorplan, as well as any "no go" areas that you've marked on the map. You can use it to create cleaning schedules, plan an area for cleaning or to prioritise your dirtiest rooms to ensure better performance.
