There are models that mop and charge themselves which can be essential for those who have children or pets. Many of the
best smart vacuum performers in our tests have good obstacle avoidance.
1. Roomba iRobot i3+ from iRobot EVO
The i3+ EVO is similar to its sibling the i3 EVO. They differ only in that the i3+ has self-emptying capabilities. The i3+ is an excellent option for those looking for a a fully automated, hands-off cleaning experience, but want to manually empty the robot's dustbin after it has filled up.
Both robots do well cleaning up surface debris from carpets and hard floors and they are very good in moving around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates smart maps of your home that help the i3+ EVO to navigate and clean in a manner that maximizes efficiency. However unlike the i7+ or other top-rated robots we tested the i3+ doesn't have a feature for avoiding obstacles and therefore it could be stuck on things like socks or power cords and it can have difficulty navigating across surface transitions like hardwood to rug.
iRobot recommends clearing areas in which the i3+ EVO will vacuum before you use it, and include clearing out any clutter or toys it may come across. It is also recommended to keep the dustbin and filters clear to avoid becoming clogged. When the i3+ EVO’s internal bin is empty or the battery is low it returns to the docking station, and it automatically empties the dirt into the station's dust bin. Then it continues cleaning from where it started. Battery life is about an hour and a half of continuous usage. It takes 3 hours to charge.
2. Roomba by iRobot
The iRobot i7+ is an excellent model from iRobot's flagship line, and it comes with the most recent features. It has self-charging and self-navigating, but the most significant feature is its auto-emptying bin. This removes the need for routine maintenance.
The Roomba I7+ can make rooms more efficient maps using Imprint Smart Mapping. It also works with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning jobs and control your robot using voice or via the app.
In our testing the i7+ performed faster and more maneuverable than our runner-up and the eufy RoboVac G30, and it removed large chunks of pet hair from all surface types including carpeting. Its biggest advantage over the eufy, though it self-empties its dust bin, which eliminates a major cause of maintenance and reduces the cost of maintenance.
We were also impressed with the i7+'s compatibility Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant AI services. We used these services to instruct the robot on how to start or stop cleaning sessions, as well as to move around the room, and even vacuum a specific area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ to these services. After being connected, to voice commands to the i7+ such as "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options to manage the i7+'s preferences and monitoring its performance.
3. Dyson Cyclone V10
This tiny Dyson model is an athletic car in a world of cordless vacuums that feel like minivans and buses. It has the power and features to replace a stand-up vacuum for the majority of households however, it can also fit perfectly next to the table for a coffee or shelves that you can spin around like the magic wand.
The V10 is powered by a Lithium-ion battery with 7 cells of energy, which produces energy that lasts for 60 minutes. Its advanced whole-machine filter system captures allergens and expels cleaner air back into your home. Its specialized head uses stiff nylon bristles to drive deep into carpets, and then pick up large crumbs or fine dust. It has three different suction modes that can be adapted to suit the task. This model also has docks that charge to 100% in 3.5 hours and provides an easy access to two attachments and the clip for a wand. This is a huge improvement over older Dysons, which require a lengthy charge and are a pain to store.
The main drawback of the V10 is its sluggish run time. Its claims on the market that it has up to 60 minutes of run time are misleading, as CR's testing shows. This is a typical and not a remarkable time to run an electric cordless vacuum powered by batteries. It's still enough time to vacuum the majority of a home that's average size, but not quite long enough to cover every area (though the second time around usually does the trick). This model has its own advantages, however: it's lighter and more maneuverable than older Dysons cordless models and its ability to vacuum is significantly better on carpets with low pile.
4. iRobot Roomba 694"
The 694 is a basic robot vacuum that's a great choice for those who don't have lots of money to spend on an expensive robot. Its flat front allows it to reach corners and edges of walls.
Its intelligent navigation system makes use of iAdapt technology to stay clear of obstacles and help you navigate your home. It's not equipped with the capabilities for mapping of more advanced models, such as our top picks, i3+EVO and J7+ Series. This means that it is sometimes stuck on things like phone cords and furniture that isn't as sturdy, and often is power-depleted before making it back to its base.
The Xiaomi Mi robot vacuum is superior to the Roomba 694 in many ways because it has fewer parts that require regular cleaning, is fitted with an allergen-trapping HEPA filter, has lower recurring costs, has more advanced automation capabilities and is more efficient in maneuvering itself. It also has a larger dustbin and is charged faster.
The eufy RoboVac X8 is superior to the Roomba 694 in most purposes, because it has a better battery life, has the ability to alter its suction power mode manually and comes with physical boundary strips, and can be controlled by your smartphone's voice assistant. It's also more robust, has a larger motor, and performs better on low-pile and bare floors.

In our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ performed well on hard floors, and cleaned up 86% of dog hair (on carpet). It was not as successful in avoiding taller objects like cords or socks. This was disappointing. It's also more expensive than other models we've tested, and this could be a deal breaker for certain shoppers.
The smart vacuum has an onboard camera that you can access via the app, and you can also set up a live stream from the robot's cleaning station. This feature allows you to check in on pets or children when you're away from home. The filter and the dustbin can be cleaned for the quick and easy cleaning.
