Lolita's care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to cease performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, marine biologists hoped Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Sadly, she never had the chance to return to the sea.
The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by making her perform for tourists, overexerting her with head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. Additionally, they place her in an incredibly small tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as an ancestor in a plan to eventually move her to the open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington where she could spend the rest of her days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals and connect with their family members until they die. Lolita who has been alone at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is now being released into the wild.
