Transponder Keys
Transponder keys (also called chip keys) are one of the most popular kinds of car keys. They are operated by an embedded microchip in the head made of plastic. The microchip transmits a low-level signal to the car's receiver that only matches the serial number that has been programmed into it by the manufacturer. This prevents unauthorized duplicate keys so that only you are able start your vehicle.

The key sends its identification number to the car when it is close enough to trigger an antenna. The PASE module then validates the key and turns off the immobilizer, allowing the vehicle to start.
A backup mechanical option is also available if the battery on the smart key's smart key goes down or fails.
