Both the Q5 as well as the Q7 Max Series get very high scores on our floor tests that test for bare floors They're also particularly adept in removing pet hair. However, they do have a few flaws, however, that prevent them from being our first choice. For one, the Q5's navigation system doesn't feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology which means it's susceptible to getting hung up on shoes and socks and can't navigate tight spaces very well in our tests. It also doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of an area.

The only thing it doesn't have that you can't find in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming of floors with no floor. It's also less effective in mopping, as it relies on disposable wet wipes that don't hold on very well and can't handle dried-on debris. The Q5 does have an auto-emptying dock, however. And, if you need to, you can swap the mopping pad for a dry one in just a few seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming capabilities into a compact, sleek package. Its quick navigation and smart cleaning maps make it easy to clean and effective at taking on larger particles, such as pet hair. It also comes with a powerful suction and an automatic bin for emptying. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, but it lags behind some competitors in deep cleaning.

This high-performance vacuum and mop utilizes sensors to avoid obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the patterns of your home over time and provide more efficient cleaning. The app lets you customize zones and change the cleaning schedule. Its battery life is average when compared to similar models.

When the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted area, you can instruct it to remove and extend its mop. This will help prevent cross-contamination. It's a little more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but it has superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empties into the base. It also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can also clean the floor even after it has vacuumed. This is a feature we haven't seen before on other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

The robot vacuum and mop combination features a sleek, circular look that looks much like a Roomba model than the boxy models from the rivals. It's one of our most attractive looking robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot happens to be its smartest and has advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can autonomously wash mop pads).

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that scored an exemplary 10/10 in our testing due to a mix of high-tech sensors that include cameras, a structured lighting system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation on its own. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mops.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is easy to operate. It has an easy mobile app interface that is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only downside is that the X40 still a noisy unit. This could be a problem in mornings before work or in the evening when you're trying to sleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, but it's not as expensive as the Ecovacs X2 Omni or the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are equally capable and better-looking. If you're willing to put up some more volume and some extra cost this is a powerful two-in-one that will delight most.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a lot of advanced features that let you forget about your chores. Similar to Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that can take care of both vacuuming and mopping, with a multi-function dock that automatically empties the vacuum's trash bin, refills its water tank and cleans and dry its mop pads.

The smart robot employs a combination of LIDAR and structured light to map out floor plans and spot obstacles, navigating more intelligently than some of its premium rivals. It also has a camera mounted on the front for real-time detection of hazards however, it wasn't reliable in our tests and was sometimes confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner comes with an maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to do the job. It also comes with a feature known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house based on how dirty those areas tend to be.

If you own a larger home, you should consider selecting a model with a spot or zone cleaning mode. This allows you to inform the robot vacuum best of which area of your house needs to be cleaned by using the app or voice command. If you have lots of furniture, a stair-mode is also a good option. Also, a recharge and resume function that allows your robot vacuum to continue where it left off is great for busy families.

The RX3 is a smarter cleaner than you'd imagine from its price. It is a great job cleaning, removing 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using one pad and a reciprocating movement that is more efficient than most of the mop cleaners with robots that we've tested. And it's highly self-sufficient with a fully-featured app as well as a self-emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through an initial mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you mark on the map.
