The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored very well in our tests of floors with no carpet and are especially adept at cleaning hair from dogs. However, they have a few flaws that keep them from being our top pick. For one, the Q5's navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance and is therefore prone to getting hung up on socks and shoes and couldn't navigate tightly packed rooms very well in our tests. It also doesn't come with cameras that let it see the corners of an area.

However, it's a good choice for those who want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot and have a mostly bare-floor home or office. Plus, it's very quiet and you can use it while you're at work or going to school. The only thing it's missing that you can't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming of floors with no floor. It's also less effective at mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes that don't hold on very well and can't take on dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle however. If you need to mop, the mopping pad can be replaced with an awe-inspiring one in a matter of seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive vacuuming and mopping capabilities into a sleek, compact package. Its agile navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it quick to clean and effective at dealing with larger particles such as pet hair. It also comes with an impressive suction system and a self-emptying bin. It's the best robot vacuum and mop robot vacuum for carpets, though it lags behind some competitors in deep cleaning.

This high-performing mop and vacuum combination makes use of advanced sensors to avoid obstacles and pet waste, and it learns your home's layout over time for more efficient cleaning. You can change its cleaning schedule and customize zones with the well-designed app. Its battery life is average compared to other models.

It is possible to instruct the X30 Ultra to remove its mops and extend them when it's in a carpeted area to prevent cross-contamination. Its flex arm can also be used to reach under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. It also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can also clean the floor even after it has vacuumed. This is a feature that we haven't seen before on other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

With an elegant, circular design that looks more like a regular Roomba than the competitors' boxes, this robot vacuum and mop combo is one of the most attractive looking models in our evaluations. The newest model from iRobot happens to be its smartest, with advanced features including enhanced dirt detection technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can wash its own mop pads).

It's the only robotic vacuum/mop that has a perfect 10 in our tests, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors, which include a camera, structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that is fully self-refill and empty its base station, and it boasts its own self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is simple to use. It has a simple mobile app interface that is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only issue is that the X40 still a noisy unit. This could be a problem in the mornings before work, or in the evening when you're trying to fall asleep.

It's also a bit costly but not as much as the Ecovacs S8 MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are both equally capable and better looking. This is a two-in-one vacuum that is very efficient, but it will cost you more and produce more noise.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the high-end robot mop and vacuum. It comes with a variety of advanced features that help you forget your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaner that is similar to Ecovacs top-of-the-line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It features a multi-functional dock that can automatically empty the vacuum's bin, refills the water tank, and cleans and drys mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of an array of LIDAR and structured light to create floor plans and identify obstacles, and navigates more effectively than its more expensive competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time hazard detection however, it wasn't 100% foolproof during our tests and was occasionally confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner has the capacity to suction up to 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to complete the task. It also comes with "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vac works and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home depending on the amount of dirt they tend to be.

For larger homes it's recommended to choose models with zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean one particular area of your house using the app or voice commands. A stairway mode is useful if you have a lot furniture. For busy families, a recharge feature and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to pick up where it left off can be very beneficial.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a smarter cleaner than you might imagine from its price. It does a stellar job cleaning, removing 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with one pad and a reciprocating motion that cleans better that most mop cleaners for robots that we've tried. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured app, and a self emptying base that can be washed.

The well-designed iRobot application guides you through an initial mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules, or to set up an automatic vacuum and mop spot-clean. It can also be used to it to rank your most filthy areas for greater efficiency. The app has a range of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.

Its shape is more rectangular than most other robot cleaner with mop vacuums, which means it is able to reach corners and underneath furniture better. It also has strong 8,000 Pascal suction and combs with intelligent technology for hair of pets. You can also create a spot-cleaner that will thoroughly clean a specific area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek, cheaper alternative to iRobot Roomba. It has a more attractive, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras appear like cute eyes. It's good at vacuuming but is more prone to be caught by low thresholds and is louder than the other top robotic vacuums we've tested. It also has an app that's not as intuitive and has a tiny base station that does not double as a bin to empty.
