3 Wheeler Buggies

A three-wheeled buggy is ideal for off-road terrain and offers an easy ride for babies. They are also more convenient to move and push than a four-wheeler, especially if they have fabric slings or modular seat units that are placed snugly in the frame, delivering the most efficient geometry and weight distribution.

Stability

A three-wheel buggy has excellent stability, which is the reason it's a good choice for off road walking (especially with an all terrain or off-road style seat). These types of buggys typically have large front tires that can handle bumps, kerbs, and rough terrain. Some even feature a lockable front tire for extra stability on uneven terrain.

It's important to remember that 3 wheel stroller with seat-wheel buggies have lower center of gravity than their 4-wheeled counterparts, which could mean they could fall more easily. However, the most reliable 3-wheel buggies have the perfect geometry and engineering to ensure they are stable in all weather conditions. They should be able of turning at a whim and be easy to steer with one hand, and have a 360o swivelling front wheel which makes them ideal for manoeuvring and navigating difficult terrain.

For really tricky surfaces you should look for models with air-filled tyres which are also referred to as pneumatic tyres. They are designed to handle roads that are not paved and can deal with mud, gravel, rock etc. Many all-terrain buggies feature an adjustable front wheel that can be locked to add stability when working on extremely rough terrain too.

A tri-wheeled pram is a great option for those who run and like to walk fast uphill. This is particularly true if you are planning to attach an infant car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is a great example, with a world-facing seat that can recline flat and comes with a new 5-point harness as well as storage space for all your equipment (plus an extendable 50+ sun hood). It's light, compact and suitable for infants and can be used in conjunction with car seats or a carrycot. It also allows for a bit of light jogging, but isn't designed for serious joggers.

Weight

If you're looking for a buggy that will take on tricky terrain, you need one with large wheels. They will be able to handle cobbles, grass and dirt tracks while providing the smoothest ride for anyone. They're also ideal for jogging because they're equipped with suspension and are simple to climb and descend kerbs. However, the drawback is that they are quite heavy to push.

The Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 is the most suitable 3 wheel buggy you can use on rough terrain (pictured above). It is also easy to move up and down kerbs, and can fit into small car boot. It can also be used as a pram, with a carrycot or infant car seat for newborns and toddlers.

Fabric slings are positioned within the frame, not on top like modular seats. This design delivers an lower centre of gravity and a perfect height, instantly making it easier to push and lighter to pop the kerb (you should never underestimate how often you'll do this as a new parent!)

Seating

The capacity for seating of 3 wheelers is impressive and there are a variety of different choices to choose from. For a newborn it is possible to use the carrycot plus (which MFM reviewer Alice says is a cosy and comfortable lie flat bed that can be used on and off the buggy), while older babies and toddlers can be seated in the world-facing or parent facing seat that is large and padded, and comes with adjustable ventilation. The seats do not recline fully, but they can be lowered down to the lowest position. This should allow your child to have plenty of space and headroom.

A fabric sling is also available. It is advantageous in that it is located inside the frame, instead of on top as a seat that is modular. This means that it has a lower centre of gravity with perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier to push, particularly over bumpy terrain and curbs. MFM reviewer Kath liked the way this style of seat handled challenges.

In addition to a big shopping basket, this kind of buggy usually has very useful features like an extended 50+ UV hood, an easy-to-use brake pedal and some game-changing visibility lights that appear from the handlebars and can be placed directly in front of the occupants to increase their safety when traversing difficult terrain.

If you're looking for a buggy that will grow along with your family it's the sport(tm) is a first in the world, can accommodate the newborn, and later be modified to fit three or more children as they grow. All within a single footprint.

Storage

The 3-wheeled frame makes a buggy more stable to push with one hand and also perfect for handling rough terrain. The shopping basket is smaller than a four-wheeler.

A top-quality ATP will come with pneumatic tyres, a padded grip for comfort and excellent suspension. It is also equipped to carry car seats and a carrycot so you can use it from birth.

The MFM reviewers noted that the 3 wheel push chair-wheeler frames couldn't fit through their home doors or car boot. If you're worried about space, be sure you check the dimensions of the buggy when it is folded prior to purchasing.

Look for a 3-wheeler with 2 (or 3!) seats. seats when your family grows. These are the most efficient of both and future proof your money. The iCandy Strawberry Sport is one of the most sought-after. It can be used as early as day dot as a single buggy and later converted into twin buggies when your baby begins walking.

Tyres

These tyres absorb bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's ride more enjoyable. You'll find these on pushchairs such as the Phil and Ted's Sport which MFM reviewer Kath found to be "an exceptional ride for my toddler". She also noted that the grippy tyres on it made it easier to handle kerbs and cobbles.

These tyres can be difficult to maintain and need to have their air pressure maintained regularly. These tyres are more susceptible to punctures, so you should always have a repair kit and spare inner tube with you when you're out and about.

PU tyres can be used on pushchairs because they are a cheaper option than tyres filled with air, but they are equally durable. You can recognise PU tires by their smooth appearance and soft feel. They also slide across smooth and tidy surfaces.

You can usually tell the distinction between air-filled and PU tire by running your fingers over each one. If it feels firm, then it's rubber and if it slides then it's a PU. You can also determine if your buggy is fitted with PU tyres, by sliding them on an even, smooth surface. They should roll easily and fit snugly into wheel hubs.

Foam tyres are typically used in high-performance buggies and joggers because they can cope with the rough terrain that's associated with this type of pushchair. This could make your buggy less stable because the foam loses its springy nature. You'll also find that these kinds of tyres can frequently be noisy, as they make lots of noise when you turn and navigate your way around town.
