Bedside cots (also called co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to let parents rest with their baby at night without the risk of SIDS. They are only recommended for up to 6 months old, at which point your baby will be ready to transition to an actual bed.

MFM home tester Mehack loved that this model features a lift-off bassinet you can use around the house and the ability to rock manually. It was also easy to put together and came in its own bag for easy storage.

Size

Cots and cots differ in terms of size in size, with cots smaller than cot beds. Cots can also be converted into toddler beds. However, cots are usually only intended for children who are the age of three. There are two sizes of wooden cots - big and standard - which can be converted into a toddler bed or cot. If you wish for your child (or children) to be able to sleep in the larger cot, it's a good idea to pick the larger one.

Jasmine, a MFM mum who tested the product at home, liked that it was a bit bigger than a Moses basket, but not too large for her baby’s room. She says that it is easy to lift the baby into and out of the cot during evening feedings or to soothe and that it's quality is far superior to other cots she has seen that are flimsy.

Emily, another home tester, is awed by the versatility of the Maxi-Cosi lora that is a lift-off, portable bassinet. It also is a rock. It also has an incline of reflux as well as a machine washable breathable liner. It was also nominated for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. Contrary to some International or European cot brands Lora is a cot that Lora can fit South African cot mattresses so you don't need to purchase another mattress as your baby grows. Height

When choosing a crib for your bed make sure it can be adjusted to a suitable height for you. It should also be able to be lower away from the way, so you can lift up your baby to feed them at night or soothe him. This is especially useful in the event of recovering from C-section. For example the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted to an elevation of 58cm. the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.

It is also important to consider the height you would like the bottom of your crib to be. While some mums find it easier to lift their children out of traditional Moses baskets at the lowest height, other mums prefer having a higher base that gives them more stability. One of our mom testers stated that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular option. It is an easily collapsible side that you can push at the touch the button.

Keep in mind that a bassinet or bedside crib with changing table sleeping device is only suitable when your baby can hold his head without assistance, which is usually at around 6 months. This is because of the danger of inhaling suffocation. It's also important to note that if you choose a 4-in-1 bedside crib or bassinet which can be converted into a cot, you will need to start removing the sides when your child is able to do this to ensure they don't get out of bed or fall out of bed.

Design

There are many different styles of bedside crib that range from basic to extravagant. Another option is an adjustable footrest that makes it easier for you to reach your child when you need to feed them. You can also find models that can be converted to a cot bed or toddler bed (or both), perfect when your child is ready to transition to a larger bed.

The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air For instance was awarded Bronze at the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib category. It is a swivelling base that allows you to pick up your baby and move them to the opposite side of the crib without having to get out of the bed. This makes it ideal for new mums who are recovering from Caesarean births or who need to stay in the bed for extended durations of time. MFM mom home tester Jasmine was awed by this feature, saying that it was simple to use and made reaching her baby much easier - especially after her c-section.

Chicco Next2me Magic is another option. It won Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards as the best Cot, Moses Basket, or Crib. It is machine washable and comes with a liner, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's a bit bigger than some of the other bedside cribs we tested but it folds flat into its bag for travel cot bedside, so it is relatively compact when not in use.

MFM mum home tester Leya loved the practicality of this bedside crib she explained how it was created with babies and parents in mind. It is lightweight and easy to move. She said that the bassinet's swivelling base was fantastic because it let you move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to make access easier for moms who are recovering from c-sections.

Safety

A large bedside cot's main security characteristic is the fact that it is able to be moved up or down so that parents can reach their baby to feed or comfort him or their nappy. This makes it ideal for mothers who are still be recovering from a C-section. You should look for the design that lets you lower the bed's side by pressing a button. This allows you to raise your child without getting out of the bed. This is especially important as your baby gets older and becomes more mobile. Avoid adding anything that could increase the risk of injury or suffocation such as pillowcases and duvets which could cause your baby to overheat.

The NPR released by the CPSC NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to problems with the product that included gaps between the bedside cot newborn sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents) Fabric-side enclosed openings (11 incidents) as well as consumer misassembly, or missing components (6 incidents) and other miscellaneous product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of introducing additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance they would need to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets or at the very least, the maximum height requirements for the lowered rail. The CPSC found, however that these requirements weren't efficient or effective in reducing number of instances in which infants are entrapped by the bedside rail as well as an adult bed.

A majority of the incidents mentioned in the NPR included multi-use bedside beds which can be converted to other types of equipment, like play yards or bassinets. Several commenters suggested the CPSC add a second provision to the proposed rule for small bedside cot sleepers with multiple uses that would allow them to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using an attachment that is removable. Attachments can be permanently connected or removed when the product is not being used as a bassinet for babies.

The CPSC is currently reviewing these comments and others received in response to the NPR regarding bedside sleeping. The Commission will take into account these comments when deciding on the final rule that is expected to be released in November 2021.
