What is Evolution?

Evolution is a theory of science that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics over time. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

In recent years evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living creatures develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or ability to produce offspring. In time, this genetic variability can result in the development of entirely new biological functions or physical traits in the same population. The change in gene frequencies is known as natural selection and it is the main driver of evolutionary changes. Other changes that aren't genetic, such as an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, can't be considered evolution because they aren't passed down to the next generation.

Creationists are using the argument that evolution is controversial, in spite of the fact that it has been proven accurate by thousands of scientific tests and that it has been tested over time. They argue that the theory should not be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists have gained a few victories in their efforts to eliminate evolution from textbooks for high school and have also gotten rid of any mention of the evolutionary origins of humans and the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur that is thought to be the ancestor of birds.

Why is Evolution important to humanity?

The evidence comes from a wide variety of sources, including fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently verify the evidence.

The majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this belief vary. Some scientists study evolution to discover practical solutions for example, such as the development of medications, while others are motivated by an interest in improving the quality of life for animals and plant species, usually for the benefit of humans. What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken literally. Although some creationists are not Christian, many are. Creationists generally fall into one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

YECs are the most well known form of creationist, and they believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of six days of creation was literal and that the universe and the life on Earth were only created recently.

OECs are less well known However, they are just as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is a myth.

Both types of creationism deny that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origins of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is not possible because it would require miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought resisted miracles because they feared they could lose their credibility.

Some creationists accept both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and call their position "theistic evolution." This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of the created species." In this belief system, God creates the original species and allows them to change over time. Eventually the evolutionary changes produce new species that are similar to the original ones.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event called the Great Flood. Creationists believe that all the species of the beginning were created at the same moment and then gradually evolved. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis, and argue that the creation of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.

In general, creationists are against teaching of evolution in schools. This is a position that is backed by a variety of professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education, the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some scientists and educational institutions are, however, more flexible and permit both creationism and evolution to be included in their curricula.

What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of the concept of creationism, many of them think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. The publishers of high school textbooks announced recently that they will remove references to evolution in their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this effort. STR has secured its first victory in eliminating examples of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx from textbooks. The next goal is to remove excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research and also on human evolution.

STR claims that it has the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its goal is to weed out what it believes is the "atheist materialism" that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of students in biology revealed that a majority of them did not believe in evolution. The root causes are unclear but could be due to religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists in the United States.

The KACR has achieved a lot through its lectures and seminars in the past. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences that has an orthodox creationist perspective, which sparked interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught in the present.

On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from outside the country including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin addressed an audience of several thousand. KACR and its members have given lectures on creation science in major seminaries as well. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
