Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and audi key programmer where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two pins for the connector and they serve different purposes but the best way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I don't know what to do. I think I've ruled everything else out. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. To accomplish this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

The signs of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when you are in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. The good news is they are very affordable and easy to find, especially in the case of the Bosch model, like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this component is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the reason behind a slew of issues with your car. It's an essential component of the transmission of your audi a3 spare key key for audi shell - Faktes.Ru, because it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the engine is turning. If this sensor fails, it will cause problems for the transmission as well as the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU is then able to process this signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those two pins. This part is common across the audi keyless entry 80-100-200-RS2 range, from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 Du You may also find them in wrecking yards.
