The upgrade system in World of Warcraft allows players to upgrade the quality of their gear by spending currencies at an
item upgrader NPC. This system was first introduced in Mists of Pandaria, and was further developed in Warlords of Draenor. It's a good way to increase the quality of your equipment, allowing you to skip the tedious grind of questing and avoid a bunch of wipes in Mythicand dungeons.
When an item is upgraded the type of item it is upgraded to. Upgrading a normal
item upgrading will create an Exceptional item while upgrading an Exceptional item will create an Elite version of the base item. The item will retain all of its prior upgrade statistics, but will also gain an additional benefit from its new base type. This bonus is randomly selected. It could be a weapon that has a greater damage range, an improved speed of reloading, or increased max defense roll.
The amount of extras that you gain with an upgrade depends on the number of upgrades done. Each upgrade will increase the number of extras by three points maximum. Each upgrade will also increase the main stats by +1.
In addition to the stat increase, some upgrades will also provide a random boost. These boosts can be extremely valuable and should be taken into consideration when choosing which items to upgrade. Some of these boosts can only be used in specific designs (such the Whistan's Shield in FB Sorcs) Some are valuable to collectors.
Some items have a built-in boos that is not effective when upgraded. For example the Goldwrap offers an additional potion slots. These are often upgraded to add value to a close-to-perfect or perfect

Costs
There are a few costs related to upgrades of items. The first cost is the upgrade itself. This price is contingent on the new ilvl of the item and the number of perks it gains and is often expensive. Upgrades to higher levels (such as Explorer to Champion or Veteran to Heroic) can be expensive.
The other is the cost of the materials needed to upgrade. The items used are typically either Power Dices (dropped by monsters 21+) or Minerals and Erons (obtainable through completing specific Mists of Pandaria or Warlords of Draenor quests). The amount of these items needed can be found in the inventory of an upgrade vendor.
Upgrades to an item are an intricate process that requires time. It can take up to 8 hours, depending on the magnitude of the upgrade. The base stats of an upgraded item are calculated based on the new ilvl as well as other properties. This calculation determines the updated Armor Class bonus, damage dice, as well as other important stats. In some cases the upgrade will provide additional advantages that can be picked from a list of benefits.
In rare instances, the upgrade will only replace the highest-costing bonuses. Occasionally, the upgrader will make other modifications to an item, such as changing the damage type of a weapon or or removing an operative or unwieldy property. The cost for these modifications is determined by the item's current ilvl and it may require a special material, such as adamantine alloy.
Success Rate
The process of upgrading an item is dependent on chance. Like any random system there is a chance that it won't work. There are a number of ways to increase the chances of success. This includes the use of an item known as an Upgrade Pity or the addition of additional items to the upgrade.
An Upgrade Pity is a product that you can purchase from the smithing NPC in Lost Ark. It increases the odds of an upgrade being successful by some percentage. It's similar to the "luck bonus" that some items offer, but it is more secure. It can be added to any armor or weapon, and can be used up to three times.
You can also add additional components to the upgrade to increase the chance of success. They are displayed in a window above the + button. There are however limitations to this, and the largest amount of material that can be added is shown just above the + button in the user interface.
Another way to increase the chance of an upgrade succeeding is to use the item known as the Blacksmith Blessing or an upgraded version of it. This item is helpful when you own an item of equipment that is at the maximum level for its tier, or is close to it. This item lets you upgrade the equipment to the next tier without the risk of it breaking.
If an upgrade is unsuccessful it will be returned to its original state. This is typically a downgrade, but could also be an upgrade. It is recommended to save upgrades for when you're close to the highest level of an item, and use it as an emergency.
Kafra has a number of items that can be utilized in order to increase the chances of an upgrade being successful. For instance upgrading an equipment with HD Oridecon or HD Elunium repeatedly will give you a higher chance of success. The success rate will also be increased if you increase the chance of getting a Double Mint by Shoe-Minting five times.
Failure Rate
The upgrader of an
item upgrades allows the player to add an additional card slot to their equipment. The slots can be used to upgrade an item or apply an enchantment. It is important to note that not all items can be upgraded. The enchantment and upgrade rate is dependent on the rank of the item. The higher the rank of the item is, the more Zeny items will be required to upgrade it.
This system can be very expensive, particularly for top-of-the-line equipment. Upgrades to armor and weapons can cost up to 100,000 Z or 100 Carnium. The rate of success decreases as you go up in rank. However, you can make use of cash shop items to increase the chances of upgrading your item efficiently.

The interface for the item upgrader is somewhat confusing, but not impossible to navigate. The main menu is located on the left and the upgrade window is located on the right. The arrows to the left of the UI represent the various phases of the upgrade process. If you're not certain what you're doing, use the question mark icon for assistance.
