World of Warcraft
Item UpgradesItem upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade you choose, it can boost the rarity of an item or mark Level and boost additional stats.
Upgrading gear in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next
Best item upgrader by a certain amount.
Item Level
The value of an item's basic stats increase when it is upgraded. The value is the sum of all of the perks that are leveled up (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades to items can be costly, depending on the upgrader you choose and the type of upgrade you choose to perform. This is because of how many perks have to be replaced to allow the item to be upgraded.
The level of an item is a commonly used measurement of power and can be found on all item tooltips. It can also be used as a gating requirement when waiting to queue for dungeons and scenarios, and raids, as well as to limit the amount of PvP gear that a player can wear (since PvP is capped at a lower level). Players can view their average level of items on their character sheet.
The level of an item will allow players to compare the strength of equipment when they decide to buy or sell. It's an indicator of the item's condition and quality. Comparing items in the inventory of a vendor can be done using the item level.
The item level can be checked by pressing the ALT key on PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the complete
item upgrader kit description, including its value. It is also accessible by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor and typing /itemlevel in chat.
There are several theories about how the item level is determined. One theory is that the level is a number that comes from a formula that determines the value of an item's stats are worth. It takes into consideration the fact that various perks have different value, and also that gems in sockets add to the item's overall value. This can result in an item's ilvl which is calculated and is often very close to Blizzards actual item level.
It's not the only thing that affects the value of an item. The level of the area where the item was dropped can alter its stats. For example it can increase the item's haste, or crit rating. Items that drop in higher-level situations will have higher ilvl.
Item Stats
Item stats can be the difference between a good or bad item for players. The game utilizes them in many ways to encourage players to not limit themselves to one weapon and to encourage players to experiment with other weapons. The base stats on a weapon are increased by the weapon's stat mods, which are themselves increased by the player's skill.
Item upgrades add to that by increasing certain stats of the item. The rarity of an item determines its cost of upgrading. An
item upgrader kit that is white or grey for instance, will only be upgraded one time however, items with rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times at higher costs.
Another method of altering the stats on an item is to use affixes. They are stat boosts which can be added by the player to an item. Affixes are used to give items additional damage, special capabilities (such as the ability to revive dead or reduce cooling downs) or to differentiate them by naming them.
Presently, all affixes are able to be modified by selecting them in the upgrade window and pressing the green button with circles arrows. This process will cost the player a certain amount of gold and other items, which can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same way as the other rerolling options.
Players can upgrade an item with a specific stat or reroll affixes. The possible stat ranges for an item are determined by the level of the item, but every item is guaranteed to have at minimum one stat within that range, unless it is a unique item or a God roll from a boss in a raid.
This is another aspect that could be altered by introducing an option to upgrade the equipment without rolling the affixes or deciding which stats to increase. Like the base equipment, it must be done per item and the item comparison interface wouldn't display all possible stats at once.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player boosts the chance of finding items, the properties that are spawned by loot and the intensity of these properties. However, it does not, directly affect damage or the ability to
upgrade items. It simply gives players the chance to acquire better equipment earlier in the game, and is therefore more valuable in early game runs as opposed to later ones, since most players prefer higher weapon scaling and defenses over the raw damage gain.
In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chances of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading which increases with each item level and can be further increased by using an anti-material, such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.
Weapons, armor, and shields can spawn or be crafted with the Luck property, which has an initial value of 40. These items can be improved by using golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the type of material) to add another 40 luck or to increase the luck of the item to 140.
Additionally some items, like the Hollow weapon that is infused with hollow, can be equipped to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items are available in the shop or crafted by using the appropriate ingredients.
Item Failure
Upgrades to items are costly and not all upgrades will succeed. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chance of success of an upgrade or to stop players from losing their item if it is not successful.
When you upgrade an item, the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage indicates the probability of successfully upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special Materials. The probability of success can only be increased so high, and the probability that the upgrade will fail cannot be greater than 100%..
The success of an
item upgrades is also influenced by the luck of the item. Every item has an overall success rate of 25%, and every item with Luck increases this chance by 5percent.
Note that item upgrades are rendered above the inventory items therefore enchantment glints and other effects can be masked by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
