You can get upgrade components by crafting or buy them from vendors. They can also be looted or dropped from other players, on the Trading Post, or as rewards. Upgrade components can be inserted into weapons, armor and trinkets. They can also be attached to gathering tools. However, the majority of upgrade components can't be salvaged or replaced, unless by using an Upgrade Extractor. The exception is glyphs, which can be salvaged by using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Depending on the type of item, upgrading it could cost Dilithium or gold. A lot of upgrades require Flightstones or crests. The amount of Flightstones and Crests needed to upgrade an item is determined by the level of the item. Blizzard also sets a maximum upgrade level. Upgrades to the highest level are expensive, especially when it comes to upgrading PvE equipment.

Upgrades to items can alter a weapon's ammunition type or size of the damage die, alter its operative or unwieldy special weapon property, or alter the requirements for hand use. Certain upgrades can even alter the appearance of a weapon.

While boosting stats is the main goal of upgrades to items, you should consider the costs associated with upgrading an Best item upgrader prior to making the decision. Spend your gold on rare items, and not on items that are of the common or magic tier.
